Make Peru your home for an extended stay

In recent years, Peru has become an increasingly attractive destination for many foreigners—not only for its diverse landscapes but also for its renowned cuisine. This has positioned the country as one of the leading tourist destinations in the region, recording approximately 1,054,451 movements¹, a 6.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024.

In recent years, many foreigners have chosen to settle in Peru legally, whether for study, family, or work purposes, among others.

Since the implementation of new migration policies in 2017, the process of regularizing the status of foreign nationals in Peru has become more accessible, allowing them to obtain the resident status in the country.

Peruvian law establishes two main migration categories, depending on the applicant’s needs:

• Temporary: Allows a maximum stay of 183 days, renewable.

• Resident: Authorizes a stay of up to 365 days, with certain exceptions allowing for a longer period.

Among the most requested migration categories by our clients are the following:

• Resident Worker: Grants the holder a renewable one-year residence, during which they may carry out paid work activities under an employment contract.
• Family-Based Residence (Peruvian or Resident relative): Grants a renewable one-year residence when the relative is a foreign resident, and two years when the relative is Peruvian (including a spouse). This status allows the holder to engage in remunerated work, such as employment with a company.
• Rentista (Retiree) Residence: Grants indefinite residence; however, it does not authorize the holder to perform any economic activity.
• Permanent Resident: After three consecutive years of continuous residence, the holder may apply for permanent residence, which is granted indefinitely.

Holders of a resident migration status are also issued a Foreigner’s ID Card (Carné de Extranjería), an official identification document in Peru. This ID enables access to essential services such as opening bank accounts, obtaining credit evaluations for loans, enrolling in schools and universities, and affiliating with the Comprehensive Health Insurance (SIS), among others.

In conclusion, Peru offers a variety of migration options tailored to the needs and goals of foreigners who wish to establish themselves in the country. Regularizing one’s migratory status not only ensures legal stability and security but also opens the door to full integration into Peru’s economic and social life.
